Loudspeaker units
Fixed part of a reinforcement system are loudspeakers. Once quality requirements are set, speaker components of different sizes are usually chosen, each capable of providing a specific frequency range.
There are also systems that use only one size of loudspeaker, fullrange loudspeakers, but when demands are made on sound level and sound quality, two-way or three-way systems are quickly preferred when designing. An exception to this are certain line array systems
Fullrange cabinet
The low, mid and high are usually reproduced from a single cabinet, while the deep low - if a setting requires it - comes from a subwoofer. Such a single fullrange cabinet, i.e. with low mid and high, is sufficient for high-quality sound in many cases, but for demanding music material and for sound effects, a subwoofer is indispensable.
Active and passive
Fullrange cabinets come in passive and active versions. In the first case, the speaker components, the drivers, are driven by an external amplifier. In the second case, the cabinet containing the drivers is also equipped with one or more amplifier units. In all cases, an electronic circuit ensures that each driver is fed the frequency range in which it functions optimally: the crossover or crossover.
How this crossover is set up largely determines the final sound quality, and especially when working with a subwoofer, the tuning is even crucial. Systems that integrate these functions are considerably easier to place and adjust.
